Track Descriptions for ISU Fall Leadership Conference
Each participant will select a track and stay in that track for the entire event.
Getting Involved
Get involved at ISU! This track will help you learn the short and long term benefits of being involved (and how to market those benefits to future employers), will share opportunities to get involved and become a leader at ISU, and will lend insight into working effectively with peers, time management skills, and communication. A panel of student leaders will share advice and techniques they have learned!
Global Perspective
Advances in modern technology and business have increased demand for globally competent leaders. Beyond mere exposure to other cultures, leaders must be able to meaningfully engage with others in the global community. Participants in this track will explore components of international leadership, identify and overcome barriers to cross-cultural communication, learn about opportunities for engagement at Iowa State, in the Ames community and beyond, and meaningfully engage in a conversation about what it means to be a member of the global community.
Civic Engagement & Servant Leadership
Make your mark on the world by engaging as a member of your campus, city, and professional communities. In this session, participate in a simulation to put yourself in the shoes of some of our less-fortunate community members, and learn ways to be an active citizen to help build stronger communities. Even as a student or young professional, it is easy to find ways to contribute. Hear from current students and young professionals who incorporate service into their lives on a daily basis. Be ready to be inspired and ready for action after this session!
Knowing Yourself to be an Effective Leader
One part of being an effective leader is knowing your own personal leadership style and recognizing how you handle various situations. This track will help you discover different leadership styles and ways you can implement them in various situations you encounter. In an interactive format, learn from campus professionals and students and see how they have adopted their own leadership styles.
Running your Student Organization
This track will focus around the student organization and how students can enhance their current leadership skills as leaders within a group. Students who are currently involved and want to know more about running a meeting, hearing a student panel, and experiencing how to handle group conflict are encouraged to participate in this track. It will be a fun and interactive way to learn about the nitty gritty information of a student organization.
