Frequently Asked Questions by Academic Advisors

Q:          What is the purpose of this course?

A:            This one credit course is designed to help freshmen and sophomore students (60 and fewer ISU credits) understand their own leadership style and prepare them to become leaders on and off campus. This course will provide students with an array of learning opportunities, resources, and the opportunity to work with current campus leaders.

Q:           How do students sign up for this course?

A:            We have instituted an application process for this course. Students must apply at www.sac.iastate.edu/lisu

Q:           Why is there an application for the course?

A:            Before Leadership ISU became a class, there was an application process. In the past few years, we have seen the commitment level of the students decrease.  In 2010, we instituted an application process to allow us to identify the students best suited for this experience.

Q:           What is the deadline for application to be submitted?

A:            There is no set deadline for the application to be submitted. We will accept 70 students into the course.

Q:           How is the course organized?

A:            The course is based on the Social Change Model of Leadership. Students work in small groups called clusters. These cluster groups are facilitated by one undergraduate student and one graduate student. The class is interactive so students are expected to be present and contribute to the conversation and activities.

Q:           Why should my advisees sign up for this opportunity?

A:            This course gives students the chance to learn about leadership skills through the Social Change Model. It also helps orient them to campus because of the speakers and other opportunities that we present to them.
