Leadership Development Model
:
LEADERSHIP JOURNEY

Background
At Iowa State University there is a wide variety of leadership programming for traditional aged students. Leadership programs and services at Iowa State University are varied from formal and informal programming, student
organizations, services and academic programs (See Leadership Journey). As Astin and Astin (2000) stated, Student leaders are not born. This statement provides a goal for a campus-wide comprehensive leadership
development model. This model would include specific learning outcomes to guide all leadership development programs. It is imperative to have a grounded, cohesive theoretical foundation to build upon when developing leadership programs and a leadership development model. (p. 23).

Goals
The overarching goals for the Iowa State University Leadership Development Model will be:

  • To serve as a touch stone for students who participate within the structured and unstructured leadership
    development experiences
  • To guide for practitioners to develop programs and events for students.
  • To reach the proposed strategic plan’s vision, it is vital that a leadership development model and learning outcomes be created to serve as a foundation for campus leadership programs.

Outcomes
Phases of students’ personal leadership development include:
• Decisive thinking
• Working effectively autonomously and in teams
• Gaining knowledge of work skills
• Understanding yourself
• Writing clearly and effectively
• Speaking clearly and effectively
• Understanding diverse cultures
• Personal reflection
• Developing ideals and moral principles
• Contributing to the community
(National Survey of Student Engagement Learning Outcomes)

Guiding Principles

  • Leadership involves character. The six pillars of character are: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
  • Leadership is about being agents of change. Students should work to make a significant difference in our world.
  • Leadership should be inclusive . . . valuing diverse voices, ideas and perspectives.
  • Leadership is action, not position. Anyone can be involved in the process of leadership.
  • Students should "lead as if no one is watching" - with integrity, heart & courage.
  • Students should "lead as if everyone is watching" - respecting the opinions of all and encouraging members to strive for excellence.
