Philosophy
The Iowa State University Leadership Journey is designed to provide a variety of learning experiences that will prepare students for leadership and service to the state of Iowa and the world.
Background
At Iowa State University there is a wide variety of leadership programming for students. Leadership programs and services at Iowa State University are varied from formal and informal programming, student organizations, services and academic programs. As Astin and Astin (2000) stated, student leaders are not born. This statement provides a goal for a campus-wide comprehensive leadership development model. This model would include specific learning outcomes to guide all leadership development programs. It is imperative to have a grounded, cohesive theoretical foundation to build upon when developing leadership programs and a leadership development model (p23).
Goals
The overarching goals for the Iowa State University Leadership Development Model are
- To provide direction and to serve as a reference point for students who participate in structured and unstructured leadership development experiences
- To guide the development of programs, experiences and events for students.
- To develop the five core competencies of leadership: intellectual growth, effective communication, clarified values, self-awareness, and collaboration.
- To support ISU's mission statement, "to create, share and apply knowledge to make Iowa and the world a better place."
