Social Change Model Overview
Leadership ISU has as its foundation the Social Change Model of Leadership.
The Social Change Model emphasizes clarification of values, development
of self-awareness, ability to build trust, capacity to listen to and
serve others, engagement in collaborative work, and creation of change
for the common good. Developed by Dr. Alexander Astin, the Social
Change Model involves 3 values-based domains: individual, group, and
societal. Interacting with these domains are 7 principles that Leadership
ISU can promote within its participants.
Individual Values
Consciousness of Self - To be aware of one's self.
Congruence - To make decisions and take action based upon deeply-help
personal beliefs and convictions.
Commitment - Refers to the intrinsic motivation of an individual.
Group Values
Collaboration - This involves working together towards a common goal,
and includes shared responsibility and accountability.
Common Purpose - Having shared goals and values.
Controversy with Civility - Refers to civil openness to disagreements
and others' viewpoints.
Societal Values
Citizenship - Connecting the self to the environment and the greater
community.
In summary, by using the Social Change Model, Leadership
ISU can attempt to "develop a conscious and congruent person
who can collaborate with others, who can become a committed participant
in the shaping of the group's common purpose, who can help to resolve
controversy with civility and be a responsible citizen.
