Leadership and Service Center Consultant Application

The Leadership and Service Center Consultants are a group of dedicated Iowa State students committed to the advancement of student leadership and service opportunities on campus. Consultants have the opportunity to develop and apply their leadership skills through one-on-one consulting with students interested in getting involved in leadership and service related activities, developing and facilitating workshops for recognized student organizations, assisting with the planning and executing of large-scale campus leadership and service programs, and helping ISU students to start new student organizations on campus. Consultants will gain experience in public speaking, advising, networking, marketing, and event planning. In this role, consultants will represent the Student Activities Center while helping ISU students become more engaged citizens and active campus leaders.

Position Description


  • Assist students with finding involvement opportunities on and off campus

  • Help students create new clubs and student organizations on campus

  • Provide student organizations with feedback on organizational documents and processes

  • Advise students on how to improve their clubs and overcome challenges

  • Promote and provide students with information on leadership and service opportunities

  • Facilitate individualized icebreaker and team building activities for student organizations

  • Develop and present custom workshops and training to help student organizations improve

  • Help plan and facilitate organization retreats

  • Provide ongoing group consultation for student leaders and student organizations on campus

  • Help manage Leadership and Service Center team building materials and resources

  • Assist in the development, planning, promotion, and implementation of leadership and service events

Time Commitment

  • Attend a 1-hour weekly staff development meeting. Recurring time to be set after selection of the team.

  • Staff Leadership & Service Center desk for 5 hours each week. (This may vary based on role.)

  • Staff all LSC events, as deemed appropriate by the supervisory team.


Hourly wage starting at $7.50 for office hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA for 2.5

  • Must be a full-time student at Iowa State University

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in event planning

  • Previous experience as an officer in a student organization

  • Previous experience with promotion or marketing of an organization or event

Career Readiness Competencies

  • Collaboration/Teamwork: Work together with other Leadership & Center consultants, graduate assistants, and staff to provide quality customer service and development opportunities for student organizations and student org officers.

  • Communication:  Consultants communicate resources and opportunities to student organizations and student org officers. Consultants will also assist student orgs with navigating the student organization recognition and event authorization processes.

  • Critical Thinking/Problem Solving: Consultants will assist student organizations in troubleshooting any issues they may be having within their organization or with navigating university processes.

  • Intercultural Perspectives: Consultants will interact with and assist a diverse audience of student organizations and student org officers. Consultants may also facilitate teambuilders for student organizations intended to cultivate inclusiveness and intercultural understanding.

  • Leadership: Consultants will assist student organization officers in the facilitation of activities, reflections, and/or teambuilders that will help those officers better understand and utilize the strengths of their club members.

  • Learning and Application: Consultants will be strongly encouraged to use their own experiences with student organization involvement to inform the work they do with other organizations and officers.

  • Professionalism: Consultants will gain experience working in a professional office setting and providing customer service to students seeking ways to get involved or information on how to better their organization.

  • Technology: Consultants will utilize technology in a variety of ways in this role. They will communicate to student organizations and officers via email, conduct and collect online assessments, update portions of the Student Activities Center website via our content management system, and work with the Student Organization Database and Event Authorization systems.
